April 2006

i have been too lazy to bust out my camera, but i’ve been very productive in the past week.

finished the plain janes for james’ mom just in time for his parent’s visit for his graduation. i should have at least taken a picture of the buttons. they were tiny pink MICE! there is a funny story about mice attached to that. anyway she seemed to really like them! they were done in plymouth encore, in a teal-blue color.
started: sunday, may 21
finished: friday, may 27

i also finished one of two legwarmers from one skein. i’ll take a pic of that soon, and someday get around to making the other. this was a nice project for breaks at work because it was mostly plain stockinette in the round on the dpns. it is purple alpaca from knitpicks. SO SOFT.

the best part of this update: i started my first clapotis! i got my beautiful misti cotton from WEBS the other day and immediately wound one of the skeins into a ball. i started it on saturday on the way to and at james’ graduation. i knitted through the whole 3 hour long ceremony as well as on car rides. tonight while in berkeley i just finished the increase section and started the straight rows. only a few away from the first drop stitch. will defnitely take a picture when we get to that. i left out one increase section…i think it will be plenty wide enough without, and i was slightly worried about not having quite enough yarn. so pictures of that soon.

i am also already plotting a second clapotis (ridiculous, yes). i have been waffling all over the place trying to decide what to do with those two skeins of silk garden lite that i bought awhile ago. i have started knitting one into various scarfs and shawls already. but i think i have decided that they really are meant for a clapotis. it will look so gorgeous. so when i have gotten a bit farther on my current one, i will buy three more skeins of the silk garden lite. i guess i might be really sick of it by the time i am finished with the misti cotton one (as some knitters seem to be). but i could always just take a bit of a break. i joined a yahoo! group about knitting clapotis’ and some people have made three! and anyway, i’m going to need something to occupy me for at least some of my europe trip. though i don’t know if i can carry two months worth of knitting for plane rides and trains in my luggage.
ok back to clapotis. i want to drop that first stich TONIGHT!

i have been doing a fair amount of knitting though i have been trying to restrain myself in the efforts of finishing my work up this semester. just about 2 more weeks and all that will be done and i can knit to my heart’s content!

yesterday i just finished a panta. i will be posting a picture of that very soon.

i’m also making amy a pair of the plain janes because she is so in love with them.

i have been in LA since thursday night staying with keith for the PSA conference and since i am just chillin (and i was really productive for school last week) i spent all yesterday knitting while he had to work. today we are leaving to drive north and i get to knit in the car while he is driving. after all, i get carsick if i try and read, so homework is out of the question.
we might go to hearst castle which would be soooooooo cool.

when i can’t justify actually knitting i have been trying to pick out my yarn to make this beautiful shrug that is a free online pattern from interweave knits (too lazy to link anything right now). they use some different stuff but i think i am going to use noro big kureyon (first time i’ll use noro) and possibly this mohair blend called orient express that is discontinued but is still available some places online. i want to go look at the colors in real life though so i might choose some other mohair blend in place of it. the best thing is that i got $75 between my mom and grandmother for my birthday on thursday so i can totally justify the noro purchase. it’s going to be so yummy.

i finished james’ beanie before work today, but as i feared, it is too small. it fits his little sister (who is here visiting), which is good, and i also have plenty of yarn left over to make another, but still. stupid london beanie pattern is only good for those with tiny heads, apparently.

also i am having trouble starting the leg warmers from one skein. they start out with lace on the top. so i started trying to practice the lace (as i have never knit lace before) but i’m not sure if i am doing it right. it says the stitch pattern is in multiples of five, but if this is so then why would the pattern repeat take more stitches? unless i am doing it wrong? i thought i had yarn overs fucked up but from what i can find online it looks like i am doing it right. i just wish i had an even number of stitches at the end. i am so confused.

i finished the plain jane slippers!

don’t forget the delicate penguin detailing…

my friend liked them so much while i was working on them that she requested a pair “in the same yarn but greener”. i had to go to imagiknit to get the yarn for james’ hat so i looked at the cascade quatro and-voila!-i found greener quatro. so now that mine are done i get to make another pair. they are pretty fun to make, and quick.

so i got some karabella aurora 8 and melange for james’ hat (100% merino wool) and started that last night after i finished the slippers.

it will be a quick project.

and it’s not my first hat either. i finished dina’s luxe hat on monday night. i will post pictures of that soon after i block it and i am not having a bad hair day. it turned out super cute though!

hopeful upcoming projects (for me):
1. leg warmers in all that knit picks andean treasure i got (purple and orange)
2. cleaves from knitty. i am still trying to decide on a color.

i finished my first plain jane slipper at work last night. i learned things like: knitting with dpns (fun and frustrating all at once), yarn over (only sort of…), and the three needle bind off (totally awesome).

i will hopefully make the other one soon, but to keep my wandering mind occupied, i started on dina’s hat instead. this is my first attempt with circular needles and so far it is dreamy. i knitted several rounds while watching the constant gardener today. all diversions from the paper i need to be writing. but to be fair, i did read a chapter and a half of a book for school before i started knitting today. so there.
